ATS History & Team Record
German alloy wheel pioneer Gunter Schmidt resurrected the marque, "Automobili Turisimo e Sport" in 1977 when he purchased most of the assets of Roger Penske's F1 operation. His operation supported many Germanic drivers, like Jochen Mass, Hans Stuck, Marc Surer and Gerhard Berger in Formula One, but despite investing large amounts of money (for example, the BMW turbo engines for 1983) and many technical innovations (the D7 was one of the first carbon fiber chassis), the team never achieved any success on the track. Schmidt finally pulled the plug on the operation at the end of 1984 and many of his personnel moved to the then new Zakspeed team, although the lure of F1 would see Schmidt reappear a few years later leading the Rial team.
