Hesketh Racing History & Team Record

A young British Lord and racing enthusiast, Alexander Hesketh decided to start his own team in 1973. He enlisted many up and coming people, including designer Harvey Postlethwaite and future World Champion James Hunt. At the time however, Hunt was in the process of acquiring the nickname "Hunt The Shunt" and his finishes were few and far between. Lord Hesketh refused to run sponsorship on the car but during 1975 the team ran a second car in several races for various "pay drivers" to raise funds. The team found a small degree of success in 1975, winning the Dutch GP, but the financial strain was too much for Hesketh and at the end of the '75 season he called it a day. Most of the personnel, including Postlethwaite (and his wonderful 308C design) transferred to the fledgling team of Frank Williams and sponsor Walter Wolf. The talent of James Hunt was recognized by McLaren, with whom he one the World Championship in 1976.

Hesketh's original partner (and early driver) Anthony Horsley took over what was left of the team and they fielded the old pre-Postlethwaite car updated as the "308D" for Austrian Harald Ertl with a second car at running at several races, with backing from Penthouse and Rizla. As expected the team struggled, missing a couple of races and not qualify for others. They soldiered on into 1977 with a new car designed by Frank Dernie, designated "308E", with Englishman Rupert Keegan doing the bulk of the driving. A last gasp effort was made in 1978 with a single car for British woman Davina Galica with Olympus Camera sponsorship, but when she failed to qualify the aged machine at the first 2 GP, young Eddie Cheever stepped in to make his GP debut start. It was to be the final race for Hesketh - Derek Daly attempted to qualify for the next three races before the team finally closed its doors.

Lord Alexander Hesketh remained active in many areas of motorsports and is the President of the British Racing Drivers Club.
