Team Haas History & Team Record

Successful Indy Car entrant Carl Haas expanded his team's program, in conjunction with major sponsor Beatrice Foods, into a major F1 project in late 1984. His association with Lola Cars International in the USA led to the cars being entered in the 1985 championship as Lola's even though the cars were designed and built by Haas' company Formula One Race Car Engineering (FORCE). An exclusive agreement was reached with Ford to provide its new GBA V6 turbocharged engine but they were not available until the 1986 season, so the team chose to run a limited program during 1985 with the THL-1 powered by the Hart 415T engine and driven by former World Champion Alan Jones. The team ran at just four Grand Prix (Jones missed the South African race due to illness) and failed to make it past halfway in any of them before breaking down.

The team expanded to two cars for 1986 with the addition of the experienced Frenchman Patrick Tambay however the new Ford engines were not ready leaving the team to use last years car at the first three races and finishing only one. The THL-2 made its debut with just Jones at Imola with Tambay using the older car and although faster it was just as unreliable. Tambay crashed heavily in practice during the Canadian GP and was replaced by Eddie Cheever for the Detroit GP (after trying to secure Mario Andretti). Worse still, a management change at sponsor Beatrice led to the company withdrawing its sponsorship during the summer.

In an effort to improve the team hired Adrian Newey away from March and things began to look up as they scored points in two successive races (Austria and Italy) but faded again as the money supply ran short. With no additional sponsorship found in the off-season, Haas closed the team and concentrated his efforts on his Indy Car team in collaboration with Paul Newman. Both Alan Jones and Patrick Tambay chose to retire from F1 at the end of the 1986 season.
