Sacramento Republic Build for MLS

Three days after being eliminated from the USL play-offs, Sacramento Republic FC announced that they would not be renewing the contract of head coach, Simon Elliott and his assistant, Benjamin Ziemer. This can only mean that the team wants to put in place the coach that will lead the team into the MLS in 2022 and give him two seasons to build a squad and staff up to the task.

It also points to them wanting to pursue a higher profile name in the soccer world, but someone on that list might be an old friend of the club – namely, current Seattle Sounders assistant, Predrag Radosavljevi…

Beloved by the Sacramento faithful for delivering the 2014 USL Championship at the end of the teams’ inaugural season, the Serbian-American left the club 18 games into the 2015 USL season for England. Believing he would be appointed manager at Leicester City, the job went to Claudio Ranieri and Preki found himself unemployed, as the Republic had already replaced him.

After a year away from the game he rejoined the USL with Saint Louis FC before joining the Sounders in Washington, where he helped lead the team to the MLS Cup. He could obviously remain in Seattle but the offer of building his own MLS squad and coaching staff, in an area he knows and is loved, might be too much to resist.

Over the coming months we’ll be following this story and the other developments as Sacramento becomes part of Major League Soccer in 2022.

Sac Republic look to expand Bonney Field

The Cal Expo board will discuss expansion plans and an amendment to the lease agreement between Cal Expo and Ovations at their December 12, 2014 Board Meeting.

This includes an increase from 4.8 to 5.39 acres in area covered under the lease agreement allowing for the increase in seating at Bonney Field to up to 12,000, though Sacramento Republic FC tentatively anticipates a capacity of approximately 10,500 for 2015.

If approved by the Cal Expo Board Republic FC and Ovations hope to begin expansion in January 2015 so it is completed prior to the home opener (approximately mid to late March 2015).

Majority of expansion will take place on the west and north sides adding approximately 10 rows of seats in most sections as well as all-new bleachers in the Tower Bridge Battalion section.

30 for 30: Hillsborough

I just watched the exceptionally moving, ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. I learned a lot about that day that I didn’t know before and shed more than a few tears.

Every soccer fan, English or otherwise, should watch this. You will have a new appreciation for the power of determination – for justice, for the power of the common man.

You will also have a new understanding of Liverpool – both the city and the resilience of its people, but also of the Football Club and the depth of support of its fans.

If Sacramento Republic wants a pointer as to how a “real” football club is supported, witness the 30,000+ people chanting “Justice for the 96″…at a memorial service, not a game.
