Grosjean to Lead Haas F1

The American Haas F1 Team announced today that Romain Grosjean will be their lead driver for the 2016 season, coming to the squad after five seasons with Lotus/Renault. He will make his debut at the first preseason test March 1st-4th, 2016 in Barcelona, Spain.

“We wanted an experienced driver capable of developing our car and our race team into one that can score points and better itself each race and each season. We found him in Romain Grosjean,” said Gene Haas, founder and chairman, Haas F1 Team. “I’ve been involved in motorsports for a long time and learned early on the most crucial component is the driver. Romain has strong credentials and he will be an important asset to Haas F1 Team.”

There was no mention of who would partner Grosjean, but it is widely expected that Ferrari reserve driver Esteban Gutierrez of Mexico will fill the seat.

Testing What Exactly?

At the launch of the new Lotus Renault R31 at Valencia this week, the team announced that Bruno Senna and Romian Grosjean were joining the squad as test/reserve drivers…alongside Ho-Pin Tung, Jan Charouz AND Fairuz Fauzy.
In a sport that offers practically zero in-season testing, what does a team really need with FIVE test drivers? It’s one thing to have a pipeline of young talent but who’s kidding who here? With Robert Kubica the firm #1 there is only one seat available in 2012 – or 2011 if Vitaly Petrov blows his second chance. Five into one doesn’t go.
