F1 Rule Changes? Add Some Weight

Today’s Bahrain GP was one of the most entertaining races in quite some time, yet we have Bernie Ecclestone still pissing and moaning. His “chosen” teams, Ferrari and Red Bull, want the rules changed – after just three races! – because they aren’t competitive. Ludicrous and the FIA should reject them out of hand.

However, one rules that really DOES need to be changed – and quickly – is the minimum weight limit which clearly penalizes the taller, “larger” drivers. When I say larger, we aren’t talking fat here. Nico Hulkenburg is one of the heaviest at a “whopping” 165lbs yet we have reports of drivers being hospitalized for dehydration during radical dieting (Jean-Eric Vergne), or racing without a drink bottle to save car weight (Adrian Sutil). This is ridiculous and dangerous.

The FIA needs to address this issue immediately. Add just 5kg to the minimum weight of the car and driver and this absurdity can stop. Lap times will still fall as the cars are developed but at least the driver can concentrate on the driving and not dieting.

Double Point Farce

The FIA’s announcement on Monday that “Double drivers’ and constructors’ points will be awarded at the final race of the Formula One season in order to maximise focus on the Championship until the end of the campaign” has been met with shock, disbelief and anger. Fans, commentators, media, teams and drivers have been united in their condemnation of the rule change and I am no different.

This decision undermines the credibility of the entire championship – you now get more points for finishing 3rd in Abu Dhabi than for winning at Spa or Monaco? Ridiculous!

Sebastian Vettel labelled the change, “absurd” and I couldn’t agree more.

This change not ill-advised, it is darn right stupid and needs to be scrapped!

POSTSCRIPT: As pointed out by the always informative Joe Saward, this change was proposed by the F1 Strategy Group and not the FIA directly. The  make-up of the F1 Strategy group is: FIA has 6 votes, Formula One Management has 6 votes and Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Lotus and Williams each have 1 vote. Meaning some of the teams must have voted in favor in order for it to pass. It was then ratified by the World Motorsport Council.
